Item Details
Description
Two Lionel train display layouts in O Scale were designed to be "magical" toy store window displays for the 20th Century Fox movie "Joy", directed by David O. Russell. The movie was filmed at several locations in the Boston Massachusetts area, including the toy store Jennifer Lawrence stops at near the end of the movie. The store had a center door with a train display in each window on either side of the entry. Each display is 6 feet square and designed to slide into the store window. As such they have no legs but these could be easily added. The magic of Christmas is enhanced with a liberal application of snow to the buildings, billboards, trees and scenery. The buildings, billboards, and street lights are all illuminated. THE BRIDGE DISPLAY is seen in operation near the end of the movie "Joy". It features Lionel's reproduction of their four car 1947 freight set, pulled by the famous Berkshire steam locomotive. There are two routes for the train, controlled by automated switches, which take the train over four separate bridges crossing above the valley and through two tunnels. The two mountains in the rear of this display are removable if necessary. The valley on this display is formed by a meandering river, but as it is winter the river is frozen, allowing a lone ice fisherman a chance for some sport. The display includes five illuminated buildings, four illuminated street lights and an illuminated bill board. A road wanders through the scene, crossing the river on a covered bridge. Many snow-tipped pine trees dot the landscape. THE TOWN DISPLAY features a Lionel Santa Fe passenger train comprised of an "FT" diesel locomotive and three streamlined passenger cars. There are two routes for the train to follow, which can be set to switch automatically, and a siding on which to park a train. Flashing crossing signals and a bell warn of the approaching train on each of its two routes. Nine illuminated buildings, an illuminated bill board, four illuminated street lights, a gazebo, and an illuminated Christmas tree on the town green add to the "magical" appearance. A frozen river at the rear and a skating pond at the front provide a venue for wintertime festivities as skaters practice on the pond and children pull sleds and build a snowman. As with the Bridge display snow tipped pine trees dot the hills at the rear of this winter wonderland. While the town display was not featured in "Joy" it was filmed extensively on the "shoot" day and could perhaps show up in some future movie.
