This is the first appearance of the famous poem by William Combe featuring the great Dr. Syntax and his horse Grizzle. The Poetical Magazine was conceived by Ackermann as a place to publish the overflow of poetry from his Repository of Arts. The illustrations were conceived by Thomas Rowlandson and, amazingly, Combe wrote the text from the drawings, going along with Rowlandson’s imaginative flow as the artist took Dr. Syntax on a tour of England intended to parody popular travel books of the day, especially the works of Gilpin. Syntax became a figure almost with the stature of Don Quixote on his hopeless quests in the course of which he meets with one misfortune after another. Two further tours were published, and Combe also wrote the text for several other books by Rowlandson, most notably The English Dance of Death and The Microcosm of London. Abbey, Life, 214. Prideaux pp.128 & 131. Tooley pp.228-30.
