Description
Attributions for many Central Asian textiles, including flat weaves, pile rugs and silk textiles are difficult to know with any certainty. Woven in a style loosely called (and occasionally misused) “gajari”, a term referring to a kilim composed of long strips of weaving that are then cut down to size and sewn together to form a cover and/or hanging.Examining the technique from both the front and back, it appears to be very different from other types commonly referred to as “Uzbek” though one publication (“Textiles of Central Asia by Janet Harvey) calls it just that. On the other hand, others believe they may be Kirghiz. Found in northern Afghanistan, primarily in the Pamir region of NE Afghanistan, it is likely the case. The designs are also very different from other flat woven textiles attributable to other non Turkmen Central Asian groups. A view of the back of this textile reveals the extremely different nature of the structure. The colors are all derived from natural dyes, and the condition is very good, with no holes or repairs. 5'8" x 5'
