May 1st, 1868, Ticket to the Impeachment of the President, Printed by Philip & Solomons, Washington, fine. This 4-3/4” x 3” is a yellow with green print and border. The ticket reads “U.S. SENATE, Impeachment of the President, ADMIT THE BEARER, May 1st 1868, Gallery.” At the bottom is a facsimile signature of the Sergeant-at Arms, George T. Brown.“Everyone who by any possible means could get a ticket of admission to the Senate chamber produced it early that morning at the Capitol. The floor and galleries were crowded,” according to William H. Crook, a bodyguard for Andrew Johnson. On May 26, 1868, Andrew Johnson was acquitted by a vote of 35 to 19. Only one more vote was necessary to impeach the president, but that vote went to acquit him instead. An extremely rare item with the stub still attached.
