Description
Late 4th-3rd century BC. A terracotta bust of a young female with hair drawn back in 'melon'-type hairstyle and chignon at rear, disc earrings; head slightly tilted to the left; traces of red pigment. 24 grams, 41mm (1 1/2"). Ex V.C. Vecchi and Sons Ltd., Great Smith Street, London, 1971-1985. Terracotta figures were produced in great numbers at the site of Tanagra in Boeotia from about 330 BC. From about 200 BC their popularity increased and they were made at other sites in the Greek speaking, world such as in Asia Minor. They are mostly found in tombs and it is believed that they represent members of the deceased family who would accompany the soul to the afterlife.
