SUBJECT: Guanyin
DESCRIPTION: A fine and well-articulated example of an amber carved Guanyin. Elegant scroll work decorated through the robes highlighted by a delicate facial features and slender lines and articulations.
DIMENSIONS: 11 centimeters in height; 9 centimeters wide at base.
PROVENANCE: Acquired through an antique dealer in New York, NY in the 1950's, (by repute).
RELATED EXAMPLES: Christie's sale 3216/lot 1948-A carved amber figure of Guanyin.
ADDITIONAL NOTES: Often more common in soapstone or bronze, these amber carved examples are quite rare and not often seen on the market. For soapstone carving examples please see: Christie's sale 5461/lot 135-A Chinese Soapstone Carving of Guanyin 17th/18th Century. We attribute this 18th/19th century classification based on facial decoration and subtly more common in later 18th century/19th century depictions of Guanyin. Finer examples of Guanyin do appear in earlier examples, however based on our research this example is more in line with the later depictions.
