Ancient Egyptian Ptah-Sokar-Osiris, New Kingdom-Late Period, 1550-300 BC. carved wood figure wearing a tripartite wig, socket to the top of the head; traces of pigment to the carved facial features and remains of the broad collar. Figures of Ptah-Sokar-Osiris first appeared at the end of the New Kingdom and were popular funerary items up to the Roman period. The image is three deities in one, Ptah the creator god, Sokar, a solar deity and Osiris the Lord of resurrection and king of the dead. The socket was provided for the attachment of a separate headdress in the form of rams horns, sun disc and ostrich plumes. The figures usually stands on a base in the form of a box which contained a copy of the Book of the Dead.
