Description
Transitional Louis XV-into-Louis XVI-Style Kingwood, Rosewood and Marble-Top Commode, 19th century, the marble top with concave sides and a central D-section, above a conforming case fitted with three long drawers, all inlaid with three banded panels, the lower drawers quarter-veneered, the sides veneered en suite, raised on cabriole legs ending in sabots, h. 36-1/4", w. 51", d. 21-1/2". Provenance: The Estate of James C. Westerfield, Jackson, Mississippi.
Condition
In overall good condition. The case remains tight and appears to be stable. The marble top has some typical minor flakes at its perimeter edges. There are some areas of filler in the top. The underside of the top does not exhibit any indications of repaired breaks. There are veneer repairs to the banding throughout. Some repairs utilize wood, and a number use colored filler. The bottom edge of the lower drawer has three veneer losses, about 3/8" wide by 1-1/4" long, 1/2" by 3/4" and 1/8" by 1". That bottom apron is warped slightly back toward the wall. There are repaired shrinkage tears to the veneer on the top 8" of each return. Oak secondary woods employed in the drawers, and the stiles that extend to the legs. There is also a tighter grained hardwood used for other structural elements. There is some scattered minor insect damage to the latter. NOTE: of 19th, rather than 18th century manufacture.
