This coffee table, manufactured in New York city in the early 20th century, is the craftsmanship of the German furniture designing duo Karl Schmieg and Heinrich Kotzian. The two began as cabinet makers in their native Germany, trained in the traditional European apprentice system. In 1899, they started their own furniture company in London, before moving to New York in 1907. While their manufacturing plant was on the east side of Manhattan, their showroom was in Midtown, attracting wealthy buyers and increasing the popularity of their products. The business thrived until Schmieg’s death in 1949.

This piece shows some minor wear from use, but is structurally in excellent condition. The underside of the table still contains the original Shmieg & Kotzian seal.
