Description
This is a clasic Senufo kpelie heddle pulley with a U-shaped form and masked head as a finial. Each leg of the U form is drilled to accept a shaft and pulley spool. Frames (heddles) are suspended from the pulley and used to separate alternate warps in a horizontal hand loom.There is projection extending from the top of the head, and two horned projections extending from the bottom of the mask. There are two geometric forms extending from each side of the mask.This is a fine old heddle pulley with appropriate wear marking, from a very well known and early collection in New York.Culture: Senufo, Burkina Faso/Ivory Coast Circa 1920Hight: 6 1/4"
