Description
Roman Republic, ca. 2nd to 1st century BCE. This is a finely-shaped flagon with a bulbous body, a flared lip, and a strap handle formed from the sloped shoulder. There is a cream slip pigment on the surface. Interestingly, the base has a slight copper/bronze patina and encrustation, suggesting that this flagon, which almost certainly ended its utilitarian life as a grave good, spent a considerable amount of time buried atop a copper or bronze item like a weapon. Very similar flagons have been found from the excavations at Pompeii. Size: 7.75" W x 8.25" H (19.7 cm x 21 cm)
