Description
Wild Turkey, Female, Plate 6. John James Audubon (1785 - 1851). London: Havell, 1827-38. Aquatint Engraving. State 4 of 4, engraved by Lizars, retouched by Havell. 27 x 39 1/2 inches sheet, 37 x 50 inches framed. This is one of Audubon’s great compositions. This example has the addition by Havell of the aquatinting to the copperplate that Lizars engraved. Audubon said of this bird, “... Here you have [the male Turkey’s] mate, now coverted into a kind of anxious parent, leading her young progeny, with measured step and watchful eye, through the intricacies of the forest. The chickens, still covered with down, are running among her feet in pursuit of insects”
