Description
In 1965 when Duke Ellington was sixty-seven years old, he was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in Music, but the board rejected him for the award. Duke famously responded, "Fate is being kind to me. Fate does not want me to be too famous too young." (He was of course sixty-six at the time.) In 1999, on the centennial of his birth, Duke was recognized with a Special Citation posthumously by the Pulitzer Prize committee in recognition not only of his musical genius but his wider contributions to art and culture, and how his work "evoked aesthetically the principles of democracy." This glass statuette was presented in his honor. It is engraved: "1999 Pulitzer Prize for Special Citation, Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington." There is a slight chipping to one edge of the statuette.
