Description
very important patinated and ormolu mantle clock on a black marble base.It is in the empire - directoire style but dating from theNapoleon III period (ca. 1870). Beautiful subject with two women holding up the clock. They are accompanied by two putti.A cupid is sitting on the top of the clock shooting away with his bow.The clock comes with a marble and brass base which is of an earlier period (Directoire). The scene on the forefront refersto the theme of the mantle clock. It is unknown if the base served as a model for the clock designbut it seems well possible, as the ground form of the clock follows exactly the shapes of the Directoire period base. The clock was commissioned by a clockmaker based in Brighton England. (this is known as his name was indicated on the dial plate of the clock according to the former owner. Due to wearand cleaning the painted inscription was unfortunately lost)Dimensions :Clock : W.55 x D.25 x H.86cmBase : W.65 x D.36 x H.19,5cmOverall height : 106cm
Condition
The clock is in general in very good condition. The bronzes show
locally some wear to the patina. The black marble base had a small repair at one angle. The clock is working but could use some professional revision.
The base has some wear and tear that reflects its age (being some decades older then the clock.
