Carved & painted wood with silk fabric clothing, crochet knit hat, wig hair, wearing a necklace with a stone pendant. Mounted on stand with a homemade tag that says, "Miss Sherion Rose Possum Trot." A small piece of the tag is missing. On the back of her blouse are the words, "Gypsy Wheel" applied with sequins. She's wearing red bloomers under her skirt. Her fingernails are painted red. Her arms move slightly, & there is a speaker in her head. The outer skirt is in fragile condition, otherwise the doll is in excellent condition. 34" h. These Possum Trot dolls are extremely rare. This the first opportunity Slotin Auction has had to feature one. A Calvin Black Possum Trot Doll sold at Christies in 2003 for $13,145. Est. $6,000 - $12,000. Ship: $75 Provenance: Purchased from the late Larry Whitely of Los Angeles many years ago. Allie Light & Irving Saraf, creators of the 1977 film, “Possum Trot: The Life & Work of Calvin Black” in which Sherion Rose is featured. Sherion is from the film makers private collection. This short film features folk artist Calvin Black, who lived in California’s Mojave Desert. He created more than 80 life-size, moving dolls who preformed in a theater he had built for them out in the desert. During the film, you get to see the dolls perform & how Calvin Black gave them each their own personality.
The outer skirt is in fragile condition, otherwise the doll is in excellent condition.
