Provenance:
This painting was a gift from the artist to his cousin Sophie, according to the artists inscription. Painting Purchased in 2008 from Stephen Ongpin Fine Art, London, Receipt available upon request. Biography: Edwin Lord Weeks was born in Boston to an old New England family, he trained in Paris under Jean-Leon Gerome and Leon Bonnat and found his initial recognition with Orientalist paintings of the Middle East and in particular North Africa.
Following this success he undertook his first voyage to India in 1882 where he proved to be a dedicated observer of Indian culture and architecture. This work was so successful that Weeks was invited to exhibit a large collection of works at the 'Empire of India Exhibition' in London in 1895.
