Biography
The pieces in this collection are the result of years of passionate studying and collecting art and antiques by Anne and Hugh Chapman. Anne had a special interest in the Federalist Period and worked with Elizabeth Freeman of Greensboro, N.C. and Dan Carithers of Atlanta. She enjoyed traveling to New York to the Winter Antiques Show and to England, assembling a collection that reflects the coupleÕs interests and tastes as well as their love of art and history. After her death in 1993, her husband Hugh continued to work with both Ms. Freeman and Mr. Carithers, adding important works to the collection. Anne Morrison Chapman was born in the low country of South Carolina in Georgetown. She graduated from Converse College and spent a year in Grenoble France on a Rotary Scholarship. Hugh McMaster Chapman was from Spartanburg, South Carolina. He graduated from the University of North Carolina and enjoyed a long and successful career in banking, joining the Citizens and Southern National Bank of South Carolina in 1958 and becoming its Chairman and CEO in 1974. He served as President of The Citizens and Southern Corporation and as Vice Chairman of C&S/Sovran Corporation before becoming Chairman of NationsBank South, later a part of Bank of America, from 1992-1997. He served as the Director and Trustee of numerous organizations, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the South Carolina Foundation for Independent Colleges and Chairman of S.C Educational Television Foundation. In Atlanta, he was Chairman of the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, the Finance Committee for the Olympic Games, and a life trustee of the Woodruff Arts Center. {TC} (ATLA883)
