Description
A RARE FORM CIRCA-1895 HERSCHELL-SPILLMAN CO. PORTABLE STEAM CAROUSEL ENGINE AND BOILER Serial No. 1021, built by the Herschell-Spillman Co., North Tonawanda, NY, USA. This is believed to be one of only a few existing single-cylinder Herschell-Spillman steam engine and boiler combinations. Engine details include: single steel-jacketed cylinder of approximately 4 1/2" bore x 4" stroke, cylinder side-mounted valve chest with top-mounted ornate and interesting leader, 3/4" NPT governor with unique horizontal shaft and twin 1 1/2" diameter flyballs with a 2" belt drive pulley, the engine with cylinder and valve chest, brass adjustable packing glands, all supported on a heavy cast iron open frame with frame-incorporated crosshead guides, double tapered connecting rod with wedged and strapped bearing ends, twin 7 1/2" diameter crank disc journals each with a 1 1/2" face, twin main bearings each with oil reservoir, single 18" diameter curved spoke flywheel with a 4" face with five curvilinear spokes (it appears that two have been repaired decades ago).
Other engine details include: twin gravity feed crosshead oilers, crankshaft eccentric-driven rod to valve rod and rod crosshead, intake and exhaust piping with all-brass Detroit positive displacement lubricator, heavy cast 13 1/2" diameter flywheel with a 3" face, cylinder condensate valve, crosshead oiler and other fine details all mounted on a 17" x 19 1/2" cross-frame bed plate alongside a 28" diameter vertical fire tube multi-flue boiler with single vertical row of lap-rivets, twin horizontal rows of rivets located at each end of boiler shell. Other boiler details include: an early all-brass 2" diameter lever-operated steam whistle with a 4 1/2" long bell, ornate finial and integral valve with serpentine handle, single all-brass steam gauge with a 6 1/4" diameter bezel revealing a silvered face reading: "Henry R. Worthington, NY Steam 0-200 PSI", the gauge manufactured by Crosby, Boston, to temporary safety valve set to release at 50 PSI, three matching boiler level tri-cocks, 3/4" Penberthy injector complete with valves and check valve, boiler main feed-valve, boiler blow-down valve, original water gauge column with twin brass valves each with cast iron handle, hinged fire door with heavy riveted surround, internal grates for coal or wood firing, lower 26" diameter ash pan, heavy cast iron bonnet in brackets (appears to have been replicated) with spud to receive an 8" diameter stove pipe, present chimney section 45" tall, with piping from engine into stack for forced draft, piping with main throttle valve and a contemporary provision for operating under air pressure.
Other details include a 14" diameter x 26" vertical carriage mounted water tank with piping to injector input, all mounted on an original chassis and wheeled carriage frame including twin 40" diameter rear wheels each with 5" diameter face, round spokes with hub provision for removal of wheels, heavy channel iron frame with steerable front axle with twin 26" diameter spoked wheels each with 3" face, round-rod provision for mounting to hitch. Engine dimensions: overall height from bottom of flywheel to top of governor - 52"; length over shaft - 32"; overall height of boiler shell - 46"; height to top of boiler shell (on cart) - 58"; height to top of cylinder (on cart) - 64"; height to top of water tank (on cart) - 52"; overall height to top of spark arrestor (on cart) - 114"; length over rear axle - 55"; length over front axle - 52"; overall length of carriage - 92" long. Estimated weight - 1,500-2,000 lbs. (See photos).
