Item Details
Description
AN EARLY MID-19TH CENTURY TWIN-CYLINDER WOLF COMPOUND FOUR PILLAR BEAM STEAM ENGINE built circa-1850-60. Fine details include twin compound cylinder assemblies, the low pressure cylinder with a bore of 2 1/2" x 5" stroke, with adjustable packing gland, detailed heads, heavy cast cylinder, with raised 4" diameter integral rings, cylinder lever-operated oil cup, cylinder drain cocks, polished steel head, the integral side-mounted high pressure cylinder of approximately 1 1/2" bore x 5" stroke with adjustable packing gland, polished head, cylinder lubricator, condensate valve, adjustable packing gland, the cylinder main body with twin 2 1/4" diameter raised sections, each cylinder with highly detailed side-mounted valve chest, each with exquisitely executed appointments including adjustable packing glands, raised panel valve chest, overhead valve rods with vertical 3/8" steel rod and yoke to brass ornate horizontal cross-arm with attachment to each valve rod, exhaust and intake piping and numerous other fine cylinder details. The intricate Wolf valve gear incorporating a crankshaft and bevel gear driven under-base mounted 1/2" diameter shaft to secondary beveled gears to vertical valve shaft, yoke and linkage. The ornate 24" beam with turned and tapered heavy acorn finial ends, double-tapered with a 3 1/2" diameter over a 7 1/2" wide crankshaft, 3/4" diameter crankshaft with pedestal-mounted bearings, each with removable cap and provision for oiling, each mounted on frame plate supported by ornately turned and tapered columns of polished steel mounted on 4" heavy cast 2" x 2" column base sections with molding mounted to bed plate.
Governor details include a well-executed base and frame-mounted Watt-type fly-ball governor with twin 1 3/4" diameter fly-ball weights, the governor with finely executed governor arms, drop arms, sliding collar, yoke with linkage to main inlet throttle butterfly.
Final details include main beam links each with wedged straps with brass adjustable bearings, the beam with linkage to a wedged and strapped tapered vertical pump rod for under-mounted boiler feed pump (note: no feed pump present and no evidence that one was installed), the main connecting rod double-tapered and faceted with wedged and strapped ends each with brass adjustable bearings, the ornate flywheel with heavy 3 1/4" rim face, 1 1/2" rim with raised section for special belt-drive, other flywheels include four ornate curvilinear spokes and a polished steel rim and face. (Note the flywheel runs true and the engine is free-turning.) This is a remarkable example of an extremely desirable Wolf valve gear early beam engine and a wonderful opportunity to acquire a centerpiece for a collection, museum or corporate office. Estimated weight - 300 lbs.+-. (See photos).
Dimensions: Flywheel diameter - approximately 28 1/2"; overall height of columns to top of beam in horizontal position - 21"; height of cylinder from bedplate - 9"; overall length of beam - 24"; overall height of governor - 16"; mounted on a wood base. (Note: the engine will be placed on a base commensurate with the quality of the engine prior to the sale, though represented as photographed with existing base). The present base measures 47 1/2" x 21 1/2"; overall height of base - 28", the engine's very heavy cast bed plate - 43 1/2" x 18"; height to the top of flywheel including base - 41".
