Description
AN EXTREMELY FINE PERRET'S PATENT ELECTRIC MOTOR/ DYNAMO. Patent dates May 14, 1889 and July 15, 1890. Serial #5727, volts 120, HP 3/4 , Amp. 8. Manufactured by the Electron Mfg. Co., Springfield, MA., as indicated on the maker's 3 1/2" x 1 3/4" brass plate. The company was organized in 1886 and manufactured motors and dynamos designed by Frank A. Perret. Perret held many patents, including that of an electric elevator exhibited at the World's Columbian Exhibition in Chicago in 1893.
Fine details include 93/4" x 6" top-mounted field coil supported on a multi-plate frame with under-mounted 4" diameter armature and it appears to be in exceptional condition, 3" diameter segmented commutator complete with original twin bronze brush holders, carbon brushes, heavy brass end bearing assemblies each with oil reservoir, both complete with swing-out brass covers each marked "Perret." The motor has been professionally restored. Other fine details include twin cast bronze lower supports each marked "Perret" in raised letters. Twin polished steel horizontal 1" diameter main bearing rods, 7/8" diameter armature shaft with 4" protruding section for adapting a flat belt pulley, twin frame-mounted terminal blocks each indicating DC input approximately 50 volts. All mounted on a heavy cast sub-base approximately 20" x 10 1/2". Dimensions: overall length over shaft - 24"; overall width 11 1/2"; overall height to top of field coil - 13 1/2"; weight - 190 lbs.
