Description
SOUTHERN SONG DYNASTY A.D. 1127-1279 ,Diameter 7in, with slightly rounded flaring sides, the interior decorated with a rich dark brown glaze splashed in translucent golden glaze in imitation of mottled tortoiseshell, the exterior applied same rich dark brown glaze ending short of the short foot ring revealing the granular body of biscuit tone. Similar examples could be found in the collection of Harvard University Art Museum, illustrated in Hare€s Fur, Tortoiseshell, and Partridge Feathers: Chinese Brown- and Black-Glazed Ceramics, 400€1400, Cambridge, 1996, cat. 92 , another example is illustrated by Friestly & Ferraro in Kilns and Conquerors, Chinese Ceramics from the 10th to the 14th Century, London, 2001, no. 23, a third similar one is now in the Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art, London, illustrated in The World€s Great Collections: Oriental Ceramics, Vol. 6, Tokyo, 1982, cat. 46.
