Description
Viking, Northern Europe, found in Britain, ca. 9th to 12th centuries CE. A Viking high karat (18 k) gold ring with elaborate oval face that is adorned with an inset central garnet cabochon surrounded by a pair of emerald cabochons, all highlighted with fine granulation, the gold granules or spherules surrounding the cabuchon stones and perimeter of the face, as well as arranged in triangular motifs for additional interest. Perhaps intended as a swivel ring; however, swivel does not rotate 360 degrees. Viking women (and men) wore precious jewelry such as this example as a symbol of status. Size: 1-1/8"W (2.86 cm) x 7/8"H (2.22 cm).
