"Ware made of striated clays has never been common. It first came to America from 18th century Staffordshire, and was called "solid agate." English country potters made baby cradles of it, well into the 19th C. What was made at Bennington, Vermont in the 1850s is called "scroddled" ware. And in the 1870's, importers were bringing it in from Europe, advertising it as 'Lava Ware.'"
