Description
(1) "Cavanagh Hats, New York", grey felt fedora with satin liner, shaped with a 1 1/2 inch brim and wrapped with a black satin ban, size 7 5/8 inches in its original box. This hat became the subject and title for the book "Hatless Jack, the President the Fedora and the History of American Style" by Neil Steinberg, 2005. Together with an archive of newspaper clippings, photographs and letters concerning this rare fedora owned and worn by John F. Kennedy. The origins of John F. Kennedy wearing the Cavanagh begins with his association to Allan Webb whom he had served with during WWII and the PT-109 days. After the war Allan Webb went on to work for the Hat Corp. of America as a salesman and remained friends with John F. Kennedy. (File) including copies of correspondence on White House letterhead concerning wearing hats (in general), John F. Kennedy's new hat size as being 7 1/2 inches in February of 1962, a typed note to Mrs. Webb from Eileen gifting "the President's old hat" and correspondence from Dave Powers. (File) including letters from the Kennedy Library, an invitation to the 1961 Young Democratic Festivities Committee of the Inaugural Committee Reception addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Allan Webb, etc., (1) 8 x 10 inch photograph of John F. Kennedy greeting Eisenhower while holding his hat. (4) 8 x 10 inch photographs of the Kennedys and (1) professional quality portrait of Jackie with John, Jr. and Caroline, together with a number of photocopied photographs of the Kennedys.
