Apple III, 1980
This Apple III should have been the successor to the legendary Apple II in 1980, however it became the young company's first significant failure and perhaps, therefore, the biggest missed opportunity to establish Apple as a serious contender to IBM in the early days. Apple III suffered from bad design or, to be more precise, the design of the case took priority over its technical features. Small details – such as not being 100% compatible with the popular Apple II, and lack of an internal fan, which led to internal heat – were overlooked, causing serious problems when the first models were delivered to users. The reputation of the Apple III was so bad that it attracted very few buyers. Even as Apple Inc. remedied the errors, its newest model still suffered from poor sales. Specific to the Apple III was SOS ("Sophisticated Operating System") which, in contrast to the imperfect design, represented a sound, text-based operating system. The example offered here is complete and in good condition; it has been tested and works reliably. Supplied is the original Apple III monitor, a suitable external floppy drive and diskettes with Apple III SOS boot disk, Apple III demo disk, Business Basic and the Apple II Emulation Disk (in each case as a copy). Der Apple III sollte 1980 der Nachfolger des legendären Apple II werden. Dies war nicht von Erfolg gekrönt: Es war der erste richtig große Fehlschlag von Apple und vielleicht damit die verpaßte Chance, gegen IBM mit dem IBM-PC ernsthaft konkurrieren zu können. Der Apple III war eine Fehlkonstruktion: Das Design des Gehäuses hatte Vorrang vor den technischen Features, "Kleinigkeiten" wurden übersehen (wie die nicht 100%ige Kompatibilität zum weitverbreiteten Apple II und das Fehlen eines Lüfters, was zu großer Hitze im Inneren führte). Das verursachte schwere Qualitätsprobleme bei den ersten ausgelieferten Geräten. Der Ruf des Apple III war so schlecht, dass diesen niemand mehr kaufen wollte, auch als Apple die Fehler behob und das Gerät eigentlich dann solide lief. Der Apple III stellte den ersten Tiefschlag der junge Firma Apple dar. Eigens für den Apple III wurde SOS ("Sophisticated Operating System") entwickelt, welches ein solides, textbasiertes Betriebssystem darstellte. Das angebotene Modell befindet sich in gutem Erhaltungszustand und ist komplett. Der Apple III ist getestet und funktioniert zuverlässig. Mitgeliefert werden der Original-Apple-III-Monitor, ein passendes externes Diskettenlaufwerk und Disketten mit Apple III SOS Bootdisk, Apple III Demo Disk, Apple Business Basic und die Apple II Emulation Disk (jeweils als Kopie).
