Description
Horacio E. Valdez, "Carreta de Muerte“ Painted Cottonwood, Leather and Hair. Dated 1983. Size: 59" x 36" x 51". Horacio Valdez (American, b. Dixon, NM, 1929, d. Apodaca, NM, 1992). Example of Valdez's "Carreta de Muerte" is Exhibited at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Renwick Gallery. Also exhibited in 2005 at Frost Art Museum, Florida International University. While Valdez is known for his sculptures of the Stations of the Cross, many of which he sold at the Spanish Market in New Mexico, he carved and painted saints and became a Santero, a healer. As he started his career in carving, following a life as a carpenter, Valdez joined the Brotherhood of the Penitentes, and became fascinated with and immersed in penance as a way to remember and reenact the Passion of Christ. Through a combination of regional memory and devotional performativity, Valdez created his "Carreta de Muerte" or Death Cart, of which this example is one of the largest.
