Description
Gino D'Achille was a fulltime commercial artist when, in 1964, he was headhunted to illustrate David Kossof's Bible Stories, an extremely popular book which established his credentials as a top illustrator in England. He first came to the attention of American collectors with his paintings for the John Carter of Mars series by Edgar Rice Burroughs, published by Ballantine Books in 1973. Gino has created over 100 cover paintings for science-fiction titles published by Daw Books, Ace, Ballantine and various other publishers. He is also well known for his series of Flashman cover paintings and for his paintings for western adventure stories and war stories, as well as romance novels and children's books. Russ Cochran is proud to present these original paintings and drawings by Gino D'Achille to American and European collectors. When Gino was given the assignment to do all eleven of the Ballantine covers for the Edgar Rice Burroughs series of Mars books, he decided to tie them together visually in an interesting way. The colors he used for the right-hand edge of "A Princess of Mars" exactly match those used for the left-hand edge of "The Gods of Mars," and the colors used on the right-hand edge of "The Gods of Mars" exactly match those used on the left-hand edge of "The Warlord of Mars," and so on. Gino D'Achille, acrylic on board preliminary painting for the cover to The Warlords of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs, third in the series, Ballantine 1973, 7"x9".
