Provenance: Collected by John Wyer and Martha Summerhayes during the last quarter of the 19th century. The Frederic Remington Museum acquired the collection from Helen Shahda, Johnstown, New York, 1972.

$20,000-40,000

The Native American items in the auction were collected by John Wyer and Martha Summerhayes during the last quarter of the 19th century. Her book, "Vanished Arizona" was written as a reminiscence of her experience traveling in the west with her husband. The Summerhayes traveled to Arizona with other Eighth Infantry officers and their families in the summer of 1874. They continued to travel throughout the Midwest over the next quarter century.
Condition
The rug is in good condition overall, with minor losses to the edges and very minor soiling. A dye test conducted by the Metropolitan Museum of Art for Keno Auctions confirms that the red yarn of this blanket was dyed with cochineal. The official report is available upon request, and will accompany the lot.
