Description
Egypt, New Kingdom, 16th - 11th Century BCE. A blue-green steatite scarab with obverse showing a well carved sacred ape "aani-thoth," who was sacred to the god Thoth and the moon gods. His job was to watch for the dawn. Reverse shows the deeply incised and very clear glyphs "Hu-men-Jesher-men-ra," meaning "Glory to the King of Lower Egypt (possibly Ramses II), and abiding with sun god Ra." The crown of lower Egypt is clearly visible in the lower right corner. A very nice glyph of the Sphynx is carved in the upper portion and is also representative of the sun god. The "Apes of Thoth" also assisted in judgment for entering the afterlife; watching the weighing of the heart against the feather of truth and justice. 14mm.
