Pawnee Scout Forager From North Brothers Brigade
Pawnee Scout Forager From North Brothers Brigade
Item Details
Description
Pawnee Scout Forager from Frank and Luther North's Scout Brigade. The North Brothers were military officers. They developed a friendship with the Pawnee people. The North's recruited many of them as U.S. scouts. Since the Pawnees had been at war with the Sioux and Cheyenne for generations, they helped the whites against their enemies. The Pawnee Scouts had the wolf as their symbol. The Pawnees referred to the North Brothers as white wolves. Once during a heated battle, 250 Sioux warriors were chasing Frank North when his horse was killed. Twelve Pawnees with him held off the Sious until darkness fell and North and the Pawnees slipped away. This long gun is a Belgian trade gun/forager, made in about 1860. A silver cross appears to be a woodlands Indian decoration. The attacked wolf head is a Pawnee Scout decoration. It is most likely that a Pawnee got this gun through an Eastern native through trade or warfare. Barrel is half round, half octagon. 62 calibre. Ornate trigger guard. Ramrod present. Good overall condition. 43" L.
