This is an Advertisement from 1925 and it was put out by the POMPEIAN COMPANY of OHIO. The Pompeian company started out as a local Cosmetic Company - but throughout their history they were very aggressive advertisers - in which they preferred to put out outlandish ads - of this is one of them. This Advertising Print also has a copyright date of 1924 by the POMPEIAN CO. This copyright notice is in the lower left corner. This Advertising piece is also called a Yard Long - as these Yard Longs tended to be long in nature - long either vertical or horizontal. This particular ad is 28 inches by 7 1/2 inches, and even though it is not a yard in length, the style is still called a Yard Long. Today, you see many, many, many reproductions of these early ad pieces - BUT THIS IS NOT A REPRODUCTION. It is an authentic and genuine advertisement from 1925 and it is dated in two places. The ad features a lovely lady in a red satin dress holding roses in one hand and a diamond ring in the other hand. Behind her is a handsome gentleman in a fancy suit, shirt and tie. Very lovely - simply amazing is the art work and print. The caption below the picture says, "BEAUTY GAINED IS LOVE RETAINED" Then it says, 1925 POMPEIAN BEAUTY PANEL. This was one of their cosmetics and this ad piece was put out to promote and advertise their BEAUTY PANEL LINE OF COSMETICS. The Pompeian Company grew out of an early Drug Store where the owner started making products for Barber Shops and slowly added products for Dandruff and later added a line for women. An early successful product was a rouge called Pompeian Bloom. The women products took off and the company started concentrating on the items for women. An early employee of the drug store was Otto F. Leopold and he helped build the Pompeian Company. He was the early salesman and later when the owner of the drug store died, he took over the company as President and built it into a very respected company in Cleveland, Ohio. This little company was aggressive in their advertising adventures. In fact, Actress Mary Pickford, who in the first quarter of this century became "America's Sweetheart" and moviedom's most valuable asset, was a early model for the Pompeian Company. In 1918, she was chosen to be featured in advertising prints (such as the one we are offering) promoting the sale of products made by Pompeian Manufacturing Co., who at the time was a local cosmetics firm located in Cleveland Ohio. In time this company had an European office in Liverpool, England and in Canada. In the heyday, this local cosmetic company employed over 100 people. But then, in 1927, the company was sold to Colgate Palmolive Peet for $1 million. This was an almost unheard of price at the time and Otto and his family lived comfortable in a small mansion until their death. Afterward, the Pompeian name and product lines continued on the market for six months and then disappeared forever. This is a lovely Advertising Print of that Pompeian Company (Later called Colgate - Palmolive) from 1925 - two years before they sold out.

The piece is a bit brittle because of the age. We have it wrapped in plastic and up against a mat board, but it would be best to frame and secure it with acid free materials. There is some damage along the sides of the print as you can see in the photos. there are a couple tear that go into the print. There is a very nice looking eye hook at the top where these prints could be hung. It is old and shows its age with some common defects - but it is still a beauty.
