1934A Federal Reserve Note St. Louis - Fr 2202-H Sign: Julian, Morgenthau Jr. Mule, Serial H00027944A, Place 3H2/2 - Population 2. The $500 bill was a denomination of U.S. currency printed from 1918-1945. It featured a portrait of President William McKinley on the front.The $500 bill was officially discontinued in 1969, with the last printing in 1945. All outstanding $500 bills were declared legally obsolete on July 14, 1969. The $500 bill was largely used for bank transfers and remained in circulation until the Federal Reserve began removing it from circulation in the 1960s.While no longer issued, any outstanding $500 bills remain legal tender currency. However, they are extremely rare and valuable to collectors.
