One of the great 20th-century photojournalists, Eisenstaedt earned his reputation as a photographer for the Associated Press in Weimar Germany. In that capacity, he photographed the first meeting between Adolph Hitler and Benito Mussolini. With the ascendancy of the Nazis, Eisenstaedt’s Jewish identity prompted him to immigrate to the United States where he joined the staff of the newly formed Life magazine. His long and distinguished career at Life stretched from 1936 to 1972 and included nearly 2,500 stories and more than 90 magazine covers. His most memorable images include V-J Day in Times Square as well as many portraits of celebrities and public figures.
