Description
Continental, early 20th century. Polychrome mixed wood and metal figural sign with a wooden angel in flight holding lyre instrument and a metal swallow tail flag sign with a wooden shaft inscribed "Fiat Lux" over a second line of Latin ending in "vita breva, which we understand to translate as, 'let there be light, art is long, life is short' with a bird finial at the top of the flag shaft.

Condition
Flag has age wear with some missing painted writing and some holes from originally being tacked to a flat surface with some bends in the metal. The spindle has age wear with a worn lower tip showing a hint of gilding and the bird is held in place with modern copper wire as the original mounting rivet has loosened, the flying lady has some repair to her sign holding arm supported by metal on the reverse with some paint loss in places.
