Description
Mary Ann Carol (1940-2018) was born in Sandersville, Georgia on November 30th, 1940. She grew up in nearby Wrightsville, Georgia in her early years, traveling back and forth to South Florida following seasonal migrant work.
This First Lady of the Highwaymen, in 1956 at the age of 16, by 18 she was selling her work alongside the early male painters of the group up and down Florida’s highways. Her first sales were a revelation.
In her later years, Mary Ann Carroll went on to become a pastor – her faith a constant source of strength and guidance in her life – but always continued to paint. By selling her paintings she was able to support her church.
Known for her intense use of color, especially in her trademark Poinciana trees, the subject of Carroll’s work firmly focused on scenes of Florida’s natural beauty, including its seascapes and sunsets. The inclusion of the ocean adds a sense of depth and tranquility to the painting, while the moon casts a gentle light over the water, creating a serene and atmospheric effect. This painting would be a stunning example of Carroll's work and a beautiful representation of the Florida landscape. Signed by the artist and framed, this painting has been professionally conserved. The size of the painting without frame is: 24.8" x 48.8"
