1843 Virginia General's Horse Breeding Broadside
Scarce original 1843 Virginia horse breeding broadside issued by John H. Cocke of Fluvanna Co. VA. Cocke, a general in the Virginia militia and father of Civil War Confederate General Philip St. George Cocke, owned the famous Bremo plantation and advertised his stallion ""UTILITARIAN, BY ECLIPSE."" The broadside reads in part "" This horse will stand the ensuing season, to commence the 20th March end end the 20th July, at Breme, in Fluvanna Co. at $12, payable by $10 within the season, $15 insurance, and in each case 50 cents to the groom. Mares may be fed at 20 cents per day. Pasturage gratis - but liability for accidents or escapes."" Cocke's son Philip fought at first Bull Run and the December after the battle committed suicide, believing he was not properly credited for his action
Very good condition, some minor age foxing on right vertical edge & in various other area, all minor. 12"" wide by 17-1/4"" high
