Civil War 1863 Alabama Slave Appraisal
November 20, 1863 hand-written appraisal of slaves and personal property of John Lewis, deceased, who lived in Wilcox County, Alabama. The appraisal was prepared for the probate court of the county and lists ""One negro woman Marinda, aged about 35 years, $2,000; one negro woman named Zilfa, aged about 20 years, $2,500; one girl named Josephine, aged 12 years, $1,800; one girl named Ann aged 14 years, $1,600 and one boy named Henry, aged about 3 years, $750."" In addition, personal property of a ""gold watch and chain"" is valued at $1,000; ""one pistol"" is valued at $50 and a ""bowie knife"" is valued at $15. A buggy for two horses is valued at $150 and a series of notes due the descendant is also included. Includes appropriate signatures, etc. Very good condition with usual envelope storage folds and one slight tear (about 1"" in length) along center fold.
