Civil War-Indian War Era Surgeon's Instrument Kit
Small wood case containing 8 surgical instruments and a small chain with three fishing-like hooks, two on one end, the third on the other. The case is stamped on its interior edge twice with ""W. STEELE"", indicating use by Wolcott Steele, who served in the Civil War as an Assistant Surgeon with the 1st Nevada Cavalry. The top cover of the case has ""W. STEELE"" scratched into the surface of a small inset brass plaque. Case with dove-tailed construction. A few of the instruments also stamped with Steele's name. Most instruments not maker marked, however one, with 1-1/8"" blade and 5-3/4"" overall length, stamped ""Grevellite"" and ""MEDSUPPLY LONDON."" Accompanied by Steele's military records from the National Archives. Very good to excellent condition. 7-5/8"" long by 3-3/8"" wide by 1-3/4"" tall
