Lot Essay
Lang 1943 is an independent German brand that was created by Georg Bartkowiak (former CEO of boutique watchmakers Greig & Benzinger) and Gerd R. Lang, the renowned watchmaker and founder of Chronoswiss. Few may know this bit of watchmaking trivia, but Chronoswiss was the first watch brand to introduce an exhibition caseback that allowed users to admire the finishing and the working of a mechanical movement.
Lang returned from retirement to form the eponymously-named brand (1943 is a reference to his birth year) and their first offering was a vintage-inspired Field Watch, the Edition One that is powered by the L43.1 calibre, based on a vintage Marvin 700 movement from the 1960s.
The present watch, as confirmed by the signed Certificate of Origin is a bronze prototype of the Edition One, which was originally introduced with a stainless steel case.
