Foch's Chief of Staff. He was sent to Warsaw as military adviser, then appointed French high commissioner in Syria.Recalled in 1939, he had to recommend the armistice. Minister under PŽtain, he was sent to Algeria, arrested by the Gestapo, interned in Germany and released by the Americans.
