Important antique Italian gilded brass Saint Januarius bust statue attributed to Giuseppe Sanmartino (1720 – 1793). A bust of the Saint Januarius who was the bishop of Benevento and patron saint of Naples. He is believed to have been martyred during the persecution under the Roman emperor Diocletian.Measuring 11 inches wide by 10 1/2 tall. A unique work with two cherubs on each side of the Saint, a Flagellation scene and two small vases below. In Italian Renaissance art & In the Roman Empire, flagellation was often used as a prelude to crucifixion or executions, and in this context is sometimes referred to as scourging. vases can symbolize wealth, status, and refined taste. Vases are also used to represent the Virgin Mary, her role in the narrative of redemption, and her bodiliness. In northern Italian Renaissance painting, a vase of carnations can indicate divine love, earthly love or marriage.
