Description
Important antique Italian gilded brass Saint Januarius bust statue attributed to Giuseppe Sanmartino (1720 – 1793). A bust of the Saint Januarius who was the bishop of Benevento and patron saint of Naples. He is believed to have been martyred during the persecution under the Roman emperor Diocletian.Measuring 11 inches wide by 10 1/2 tall. A unique work with two cherubs on each side of the Saint, a Flagellation scene and two small vases below. In Italian Renaissance art & In the Roman Empire, flagellation was often used as a prelude to crucifixion or executions, and in this context is sometimes referred to as scourging. vases can symbolize wealth, status, and refined taste. Vases are also used to represent the Virgin Mary, her role in the narrative of redemption, and her bodiliness. In northern Italian Renaissance painting, a vase of carnations can indicate divine love, earthly love or marriage. There are also preserved samples in Naples, in the chapel of the treasure of San Genaro, a collection of sculptures on the plate of very important quality, attributed to Giuseppe Sanmartino, Lorenzo Vaccaro, Filippo Del Giudice or Giovan Domenico Vinaccia among others, which represent the best of the orfebrary Baroque Neapolitan. Our figure is undoubtedly by the hand of Sanmartino, it presents an artistic style equal to the Santo Domingo of the same author created during the second half of the XVIII century, and which is preserved in the Royal Chapel of the Treasure of San Gennaro, of the Cathedral of Naples and appears described and reproduced in the catalog of the Treasure Museum of San Gennaro gli Argenti (2003), page. 44. San Genaro, obispo of Benevento in Roman times, martyr in the year 305, patron of Naples.
Condition
Missing Papal tiara or the popal Mitre hat. A few installation holes indicating missing jewels or cape perhaps. Loose bolts & screws, some bent base. Selling AS IS .
