Description
This is a Qing dynasty wedding bowl that was most likely made in Jingdezhen, China. Similar bowls were found in the Desaru shipwreck of 1830. These wedding bowls were made for export, but had a quality that is similar to imperial wares. The bowl displays eight double happiness characters in total with four on the lid and four on the bottom half. The other designs include chrysanthemum flowers surrounded by scrolls. This bowl is of very high quality, is quite thin and was fired at a very high temperature giving it a high pitched resonance. The bowl has some small chips as you can see in the photos that do not take away from its admirability. The bottom half of the bowl exhibits a phenomenon seen in many Qing and Ming bowls in having visible horizontal lines in the glaze. These occur during the firing process when the glaze must run into tiny crevasses that were unseen on the porcelain before applying the glaze. The bowl measures 14cm high by 11.6cm wide.
