Description
Two Qing dynasty plates of a smaller size to be sold as one unit. One bears the 'dragon over the wall' design and the other has two phoenixes revolving around a central motif. The dragon over the wall design has half of the dragon on one side of the plate with the other half continuing on the backside. The phoenixes are particularly beatiful in their delicate compostion and calligraphy drawn lines. Phoenixes of this design have been used on Qianlong porcelain which could date the plate to be later 18th century although it could be early 19th century. The dragon plate likely is 19th century. Both plates were made at the Dehua kilns for they both exhibit the typical blue pigments and glaze characteristics known to have been made there. The dragon plate has some surface scratching from use wear on the front and on the back there is some heavier scratching in one spot. The phoenix plate has two chips on the outer edge. Both summon one's imagination into play and give wonderful references into ancient Chinese lore and mythology. The plates measure as follows: Dragon 15.2cm wide by 3cm high. Phoenix 15.5cm by 3.2cm.
