Description
Magna Graecia, Sicily, Ca. 4th Century BCE. A wonderful lidded cosmetic jar sits on a raised platform which gently turns into the body of the pyxis, tapering outward to the shoulder of the vessel. At the shoulders the vessel tapers inwards to the flared rim. Two "staple" handles are attached to shoulders on either side. Lid has a very slight downward slope and has a button handle. Piece has been slipped in a black glaze and painted with white vertical "sun rays" across top of shoulder. 2-1/2"H x 3-1/2"W.
