Description
Gallia. The Leuci. AE Potin (3.08g), 1st century BC. DT 153; LT -. Lovely glossy black patina. Well centered. Good very fine. Acquired privately from Sonja Lambert, Brussels.

Rejecting the mirror-like depictions of ancient classical art, the Gauls tried to capture the abstract qualities of the world around them and convey the feelings these produced, whilst creating beautiful decorative art. This potin's wonderfully abstracted forms illustrate this penchant for the non-representational and make it a superb miniature example of Celtic La Tene art.
