Fine 19th century oil on canvas portrait of a gentleman signed lower right “GB O’Neill Woolwich, Artist. George Bernard O’Neill (1828-1917) was a prolific Irish genre painter, from 1859 a member of the Cranbrook Colony of artists. The canvas back bears the stamp of Charles Roberson, 51 Long Acre, London. O'Neill was born in Dublin, Ireland. His artistic manner was similar to that of Thomas Webster and Frederick Daniel Hardy. The height of his success was in the 1850s-1870s, when his works were eagerly collected by Midlands industrialists and the entrepreneurs of other industrial regions of the country. Mounted into a period wood and gesso frame. On sight 29 1/2” x 24 1/2”. Overall 39” x 33”.
