Circa 1880, possibly German, the cherub-headed scrolled handle over a hinged domed lid with panels hand painted with vignettes of courting couples in the manner of Watteau, within foliate-cast borders with roses to the four corners, opening to reveal a silk-lined compartment, above a conformingly decorated body with a mask escutcheon to front and free-standing fully modeled cherub supports to the two front corners, over an acanthus-cast base raised on scroll feet, 14.5'' H x 14.5'' W x 10.5'' D, est:$7000/9000

Condition
Overall good condition. With general marks and scratches commensurate with age and use. Some dark spots, rubbed wear and tarnishing to metal surfaces. Extensive touch-up to gilding. The silk lining probably a later replacement, with some discoloration, spotting and ink stains. A wooden panel affixed to underside, possibly covering marks; has not been removed for examination. No key.
