Circa 1875, signed 'H. Chapu' (Henri-Michel-Antoine Chapu, 1833 - 1891 French), and with foundry mark ''Thiebaut Freres Fondeurs Paris'', depicting in high relief a seated classical maiden in mourning, mounted to a rouge marble stand, overall: 16'' H x 9.75'' W x 4'' D, est:$1000/1500
Literature: A larger example illustrated: Berman, Harold. ''Bronzes: Sculptors & Founders.'' Atglen, PA: Schiffer, 1994, Vol II, p. 405, fig. 1520. Provenance: Private Collection, Pasadena, CA.

Condition

The bronze: 13.75'' H x 8.25'' W x 2.75'' D. Generally good condition. With scratches, marks and rubbed wear to surfaces commensurate with age. Some spotting to bronze to right side of background. Shallow chipping along 1.5'' of edge of marble on top right-hand side (barely visible when viewed facing front; more visible to side).
