Description

Titanic.- Legate (R.D., "Westy", 4th Officer on the Cable Ship Mackay Bennett, hired by the White Star Line to retrieve bodies after the sinking of the Titanic, fl. 1912-18) Photograph of the Rev. K.C. Hind conducting a burial service at sea of some of the unidentified bodies from the sinking of RMS Titanic, pencil caption: "Burial of Titanic victims from Cable Ship Mackay Bennett", laid down in an album, f. loose, 94 x 120mm., between 21st and 25th April 1912; and a collection of other material relating to Legate and his wider family, including: 2 photographs of a chair retrieved from the Titanic, presumably found floating in the Atlantic, also 2 more photographs of the same image as above but taken from a ?larger, framed version, photographs of "Westy" Legate in army uniform fishing in Canada in 1918 and later, another: "Iceberg", lumber men in Davidson's camp etc., Tufts Cove (Nova Scotia), Minesville, South Africa and Surrey, Coldharbour and Redlands (Surrey Hills), and postcards, most addressed to Daisy Fuller (of Angmering, Sussex), including: Guildford, Woking, South Africa, 2 Bairnsfather cartoons in the first World War, Louis Bleriot's landing at Dover, 1910, auctioneering old clothes in Petticoat Lane, 2 boxing postcards signed by "Spike" Robson, First World War Christmas cards, illustrated letters etc., v.s., v.d. (qty).

***After the Titanic sank on 14 April 1912, the White Star Line commissioned several vessels to search the area of the disaster for bodies. The Mackay Bennett set sail on 17 April and the first corpses were retrieved on 21 April. All together the Mackay Bennett recovered 306 bodies, of which 116 were buried at sea. Those who were not identified were recomitted to the sea in canvas sacks and weighed down with iron bars..
