Titanic.- Legate (R.D., "Westy", 4th Officer on the Cable Ship Mackay Bennett, hired by the White Star Line to retrieve bodies after the sinking of the Titanic, fl. 1912-18) Photograph of the Rev. ***After the Titanic sank on 14 April 1912, the White Star Line commissioned several vessels to search the area of the disaster for bodies. The Mackay Bennett set sail on 17 April and the first corpses were retrieved on 21 April. All together the Mackay Bennett recovered 306 bodies, of which 116 were buried at sea. Those who were not identified were recomitted to the sea in canvas sacks and weighed down with iron bars..
