Item Details
Description
Southern Italy, Daunian Culture, Ca. 5th Century BCE. Fashioned from red clay and covered with a white slip, the squat conical cup tapers down to rest on a flattened bottom. The low, inward-slanting rim is painted with horizontal bands of black and red, which are interrupted on one side by the arching handle. Framed by vertical black strokes that are repeated between its legs, the handle is further embellished with black-painted pointed horns and a stylized, large-eyes figure set in between them. The floor of the cup is painted with a red cross outlined with three thin black lines, all surrounded by two thick black lines, the outer with a swag-like octagonal frame. 4-1/8”H x 5”D.
